08 Native American Genealogy

Step 1
Identify the relative that is on the Dawes roles - if not click here and start on beginning genealogy and return to Step 2
Step 2
At this point you should have identified the individual(s) that is potentially an Indian, and the locations they are living in between 1898 and 1906
Enrollment for the Dawes Rolls began in 1898 and ended in 1906 (1914). Therefore, The individuals must have not died before 1898, or been born after 1906 (1914). - 250,000+ applications, only 100,000 were enrolled
Step 3
 
 
At this point you should have identified the individual that is legally an Indian (he/she is on the Dawes roll), his Dawes Roll number, Tribe and in many cases the Clan/Tribal Town.
Contact the tribe and get the process for the certificate of degree of Indian Blood
