About Us

MISSION:

Upon its founding on June 21, 1979, Carl Albert–former US House Representative and the Society’s first president–stated what he thought should be the goals of the Society: 1) to preserve the records of the county and 2) to attempt to record every man, woman and child who ever lived in Pittsburg County.

At its first official meeting in September 1979, these ambitious goals were converted into the Society’s two primary objectives:

  • to collect, categorize, and make available genealogical and historical data of Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, as well as this part of the Choctaw Nation
  • to assist each interested person in developing genealogical skills

Since that meeting, these objectives have been continually pursued through the efforts of members and volunteers.

COLLECTIONS:

The Library’s collections have grown to over 7,000 items including more than a thousand significant genealogical books, approximately 250 family history books, and nearly 900 rolls of microfilm.

These collections are nice, but collections are more accessible when indexed.  The Society’s Master Index contains over 250,000 lines of data.  Each line represents the occurrence of a name in one of the following:

  • U.S. Census Records
    • 1900 Choctaw Nation
    • 1910, 1920, 1930 Pittsburg County
  • Funeral Home Records
  • Obituaries (Ongoing project)
  • 1920 and 1930 Pittsburg County School Records
  • Marriage Records (Partially Indexed)
  • Early Minister Records
  • Fatalities in the Coal Mines of Indian Territory and Southeastern Oklahoma 1885-1962
  • Countians at War (World War II Scrapbooks)
  • Red Book (clipping of World War II fatalities)
  • Naturalization Records

The Cemetery Records have been converted to word searchable PDF for in-library use.
