My input to FB
|
I have made a decision (after 20 years of dedication to FTM), I have
spent half of my budgeted research time this year qualifying Family
Tree Maker 2014 and converting 2012 files to 2014, and it has been wasted.
The result is half of the files will not allow me to edit them, and
I am unable to merge my files back into one, the principle reason for
purchasing the 2014 version in the first place. I am looking for recommendations
for a genealogy software package that will manage 20,000+ names in one
file with 7000 links to media (images). I will give preference to a
program that will import the FTM 2014 files, maintain the links to the
media, and maintain the citations. I would also like to have the program
rank the sources by their degree of evidence and provide outputs based
on the evidence ranking. On line training like YouTube would also be
a plus (I really like the training provided by Crista Cowan for FTM
and will miss it). Any recommendations?

Robert O. Pulse Teresa Ghee Elliott I know I am asking a lot - I started
with FTM in 91 - DOS version and did most every upgrade along the way
- It is time for change - You are correct, Genealogy has come a long
way, but i believe we are rounding the top of the curve, and if I got
22 out of the last commitment, the next should be worth 30. What I am
really looking for a is a user interface that last 30 years with no
more changes than the first DOS version of FTM to FTM2013. Now that
is a lot of change, but I can adjust to it, and still get research done.

Robert O. Pulse Thank You Jeff Jahn I have access to three family members
on MyHeritage - I was not aware that they had offered a separate software
package until this message - will look at it.
I did evaluate cloud genealogy systems some time ago, I had the one Ancestry
has for a while, but dropped it when they published my data and did not
protect the living. Something they have corrected now, but I did not even
realize it was an Ancestry company until a relative complained and I read
the fine print.
MyHeritage is different it is an Israeli company; I assume the servers
are in Israel and fall under their privacy laws. My family members on
their system have discussed this and we are ok so far. I like Israeli
engineers, they find unique solutions, so I will add this software to
the to be evaluated list http://www.myheritage.com/family-tree-builder...

Robert O. Pulse Karla Von Fumetti Staudt Thank you that is very important
- I have just about exhausted Ancestry and working German Church records
now - and of course, Family Search is the best place to do that research.
Will check that aspect out

that version 8 of Legacy supports Family Search - does anyone have experience
with this?

Robert O. Pulse Well I am a little better off than most - many years ago,
I built a filing system based on ID numbers, in each file is all the media
and a HTML time line, the time line has links to all the media. I have
not kept it up to date, but it is only two years behind. All I have to
do is update this filing system, build the new file in the new program
using Gedcom. I may not even rebuild the links to the media from the software,
my filing system works just fine, and I have control over it. I have never
loaded all my information into FTM it contains 20 somethin picture albums
and 30+ envelopes of photographs. I just took an count and counting the
html pages there are over 100,000 documents in that folder.

Robert O. Pulse Sorry 30,000 files

Robert O. Pulse You get to the larger files if you do everyone in a county
for a society (other responses on this site) or in my case I agreed to
be the family genealogist for the reunion and our family came over in

Robert O. Pulse Sue Clifford Maxwell Thank You for the information, I think
you answered all my questions, but I will have more as i review these
programs more.

Robert O. Pulse Peggy Baldwin RootsMagic is gaining appeal to me - several
people have contacted me beyond this site for it - I have given myself
till the 19 to make a decision (the RootsMagic special goes off on the
20th) - Thank You for your input, I do NOT want to follow your path, this
is going to be painful enough getting the media out of FTM and organized.
Frankly, my citations could use updating, I have not been consistent,
and continue to learn. I cannot remember, but one of the programs I reviewed
this week, seemed to have tools for doing citations/Evidence consistently,
was that RootsMagic? Can you share more about your experiences with citations
and evidence in RootsMagic, how is the user interface, does it make suggestions
for form/content, what is the gradient in Evidence i.e., 5 levels or more?
I guess I am asking if it followers: https://www.evidenceexplained.com/?

Robert O. Pulse Janelle Vandervort Dvorak all programs have problems and
I am willing to put up with a number of them (and have in the past), someone
above put it best, I need to find a package that addresses my needs and
that is the reason for my questions - I am trying to find a partner in
this genealogy quest that shares my values, and I know both of us will
fail from time to time, but we can get over the rough spots. I do regular
back-ups (monthly) and have a 22 year history of backups (now all migrated
data DVDs, not many machines play 250Mbit tapes anymore), I kept
duplicate media files separate from program files until two years ago,
and now I regret that, but I believe the files are retrievable (will see
after the 20th). The point is that I do my share to maintain data integrity,
and I am flexible with problems that occur from time to time. I really
appreciate your feedback, I was not living under the illusion that these
programs are faultless, and was getting a little concerned that all I
was hearing was good news. I have found that if I understand the faults
in software and develop workarounds, that I feel better using it. So anyone
that has experienced something about these packages that concern them,
I would like to hear that, I can judge if I can work around it, and in
some cases it may not be important to me.

Robert O. Pulse I made a decision to go with RootsMagic at this time, the
process and documentation of the conversion process as it proceeds can
be found at http://www.pittsburgcogenealogical.org/.../S.../Index%20.htm
Note this is under construction and spelling is not one of my strong suits.
Turn-out was outstanding Thank You!!!! Comments are welcome
and My experiences in converting to RootsMagic will be updated as I go
along.

Two weeks ago I came to the following conclusions;
1. I will have to have FTM2014 as long as I use ancestry because it is
the most efficient method of moving data from the ancestry databases to
my computer, but I am in the process of migrating to Family Search for
my primary search database, and all FTM advantages fall away in that scenario.
2. There is a disconnect between how I believe a genealogical software
package and the way FTM2013/2012/2010/2008 is performing, and that the
marginal utility of using the FTM is less than the high threshold for
moving to another package.
3. I started a research process utilizing the members of this group to
help me analyze my options - the turn-out was outstanding, and I appreciate
all the input
Like you, I find navigating stings in FaceBook to be frustrating and one
of its major flaws, and since I do a lot of html work I have tracked the
feedback here: http://www.pittsburgcogenealogical.org/Advanced/Software/Index%20.htm
Note this is under construction and spelling is not one of my strong suits.
I offer it to you if you make similar decision to mine. The high threshold
to change is documented in Steps in the Process of Conversion section.
