Well in Wilkesbarre area and I would assume it was the same out there. They were paid on there skill level. Miners were the actual people that had blasting skills. Then the workers who picked up the blast debris used pick and shovel . They were paid less. Then it came down to how many coal cars they filled that day or tonage they took out.

Gives a history of the labor relations of the time
Requires more digging, but outlines the wages over time for coal miners wages and the process.
None of these articles seem to address the issue that the coal seams were only 3ft tall and these men worked on their knees all day long and used miniture tools to do the mining
