Product Review

The Master Genealogist is a career genealogists tool offering
more built-in functions and links to online sources than other genealogy
software. The layout is intuitive and there are plenty of useful icons,
but be prepared to learn the technical language of genealogy and be thoroughly
comfortable with manipulating multiple databases. If youre tackling
family history with the discipline of a statistician, The Master Genealogist
is your genealogy software.

I use the Master Genealogist. I have 16000 people,
but i know people who have 100,000. They
have training videos for sale on their website.
I hope you find what you like. Legacy, RootsMagic and TMG all allow for
a free trial download for 30 days. Try that and see which one works best
for you.
|
I ahve not bee able to fine the training videos yet
|
Teresa Ghee Elliott
|
Diane, That may be the case with RootsMagic or Legacy, but not with
TMG. The trial is the full program. It just
no longer works after 30 days unless you register it. It just becomes
Read Only.

|
I will only use TMG as I love it to bits

Another vote for TMG. Event based and great flexibility.
Good tech support and an even stronger
user base on Rootsweb. TMG-L. the RUG User Group in Virginia has
great resources for members and allows you to remotely
join their monthly meetings. My second vote would be for Legacy
then RootsMagic.

Robert, You are talking about an evaluation you did nearly 20 years
ago. A lot has changed in genealogy in that time. When you say you want
it to be around for 30 years, in computer genealogy frankly that is asking
a great deal. I started with computer genealogy in 1992. Bought Roots
III with a free upgrade to Roots IV because it was in development. I stayed
with the Roots products until Ultimate Family Tree was no longer developed
in 2002. At that time, I moved to TMG 4.0 because it was the most like
the Roots products and Whollygenes was willing to add features for those
of us coming over. Now here we are 11 years later. TMG is in version 8.0.
BUT there are still people who use Ultimate Family Tree and it was no
longer developed over 11 years ago. So by still being around do you mean
usable, or do you mean still in development? I would say if the computer
to run it is still available, then you could use any of today's programs
30 years from now, but let's be honest. How many of us are listening to
Christmas music on 8 track tapes today?

TMG will import an FTM 2008/2009 file so
you can save your FTM 2014 as FTM 2008/2009 and then import that file
into TMG. I have found that to be my best way of transferring files with
minimal errors. I then export TMG to GED and use that GED to import into
Legacy or RootsMagic. IMHO, TMG produces a GED that is more acceptable
to other software programs then the one produced by FTM, although the
FTM GED has improved a lot with 2014.
|
If I understand correctly TMG does not suppot UNICode and i woudl loose
my German Place name spelling, if FTM does support UNICode in the Gedcom

Just though I would add that I didn't have any luck with a direct import
of FTM 2008/2009 file from FTM 2014 into TMG. Working on a ged import
but when you do that have to make sure you change
to ansi.

- I had FTM many years ago, and loved it, but then the regular 'purchased'
upgrades eventually annoyed me to the point that I searched out another
option (I had previously also used PAF and Brother's Keeper), and started
using 'The Master Genealogist' from http://www.whollygenes.com/
. I have been very happy with it over the years. You can download
a trial, to see how it works, and it is my understanding that it will
read and convert to its own database, FTM files. Happy for you to private
message me if you have other questions.

Master Genealogist colors. Just thought I'd
share.
|
Lin Chapman
|
yours is tame compared to mine Teresa lol but it really does show what
you can do
|

I don't use accents for people all that much. But I love the ones for
Tag Types. I just haven't set them all up
yet. I also don't like to change the background color much because it
makes my eyes tired. Though I admit, I've used the blue a little long
and am thinking of changing it to something more seasonal. Maybe a red-green.
|
Lin Chapman
|
I use the blue edging with a pale cream background as I find it restful
on my eyes. I have tag type groups set up ie bmds and censuses but I use
them a lot for people, having the four branches of mine and hubby's set
up with a different colour, the directs being the darkest, married into
the family a paler shade of that and all others with the cream background
and the text in the darkest shade. It sounds complicated but it only took
me a few mins to set it up and I can instantly tell which side they are
from. My wish for v9 is to be able to have all those with the top accent
appear at the top of the explorer list.
|
Teresa Ghee Elliott
|
Have you sent the request to Bob. I usually use a creamy color, not
always a white, but a yellow or pale color for the background as well.
I try and change it about every six months to give the eyes a change of
scenery. I love that I can save a color scheme so when I get tired I can
always go see if an older one still works for me. I will accent people
when I am working on a specific project. I have made everyone Black on
black except the line I was working on, so I could totally focus on that
specific project for a while. Glad that's not permanent. LOL
|
Lin Chapman
|
I did put the request on the message board some time ago, and you agreed
with me lol. Virginia suggested that I use a focus group but it just seems
a long winded way if I only wanted to work on say a certain census for
an evening or such like
|
Teresa Ghee Elliott
|
I am sure I did. Sounds like a great idea. I just don't remember it.
I do create focus groups a lot so that I can focus just on those people
and then save it for later. But I like your idea. It would be a way to
weed out those that I'd already found.

I have 10,000 in my tree which means just
for an evenings work I can spend the majority of it just scrolling up
and down the explorer trying to find those I need
|
Teresa Ghee Elliott
|
The only problem with a focus group is if the person you need isn't
in the list, you are still hunting the PE.
|
Lin Chapman
|
or you press the "remove all persons" button by mistake instead
of the one you had completed the task on, I have done that so many times
arrgghhh lol
|
Teresa Ghee Elliott
|
Linda, Each of the individual windows can be opened,
closed, moved around, resized, reshaped, etc. So you can make the layout
look anyway you want. Here's a different layout of the windows.
You can also change fonts. I use Comic Sans MS. I prefer the roundedness
of the letters.
|
Teresa Ghee Elliott
|
Lin, I've never done that, but I have added the wrong people to the
list before.
|
Lin Chapman
|
I change the fonts and the layout on a weekly basis depending on my
mood lol this is one of the reasons I love it, its mine. All I really
need now is for gensmarts to be able to work with the UK parish registers
and I would feel as though I'd won the lottery lol
|
Teresa Ghee Elliot
|
t Haven't used Gensmarts in a long time. But I used to customize it
and have it search for specific records. Would that work. I don't even
have it loaded anymore. That's how long it's been since I used it.
|
Lin Chapman
|
It works with the censuses and bmd registrations but not the parish
records which is all we have prior to 1837

My post wasn't at all clear - my point was that after eye surgery I
contemplated buying a larger monitor when all I had to do was use the
flexibility of TMG to make the Person View easier to read.
|
Teresa Ghee Elliott
|
Yes, I use a very small font, but I know people who use white on black
because it makes it easier for them to read. You could change to a larger
font, have less on the screen, etc. I do kinda like that Person view only
screen with a tool bar for adding tags and searching. I can see where
it would be very helpful when you know the people very well and are editing
data or adding tags to one small family group.
